About the Cleaning Tasks Policy
Important: This policy only applies to properties in California, USA.
Introduction
From June 30, 2025, you must disclose any required cleaning tasks, mandatory cleaning fees, and the penalties for incomplete tasks in your listing. Travelers will be able to review this information before booking.
Policy
Required cleaning tasks: Your listing must state the specific actions you require guests to perform to maintain cleanliness and hygiene at your property. If you have a multi-unit property, specify cleaning tasks for each individual unit.
- Note: Guests are only required to complete the tasks specified in your listing.
Mandatory cleaning fees: Any mandatory cleaning fees must be disclosed in your property charges.
Notice of penalties: You may submit a negative review of the guest if a required task was not completed, but you must declare this consequence in your listing.
- Note: You can’t charge financial penalties for incomplete cleaning tasks.
Permitted cleaning tasks
You can specify tasks that require guests to maintain reasonable cleanliness, but not general property upkeep or maintenance. See the criteria below to determine what tasks are reasonable for you to request.
- Time: Takes only a few minutes to complete (this may be increased for extended stays).
- Tools: Requires minimal tools to perform (e.g. basic cleaning tools like a scrub or detergent).
- Complexity: Simple to understand and complete, and doesn’t require specialized knowledge.
- Relevance: Directly relates to the guest’s use of the property (e.g. cleaning dishes or bedding) and doesn’t focus on long-term property maintenance.

Policy enforcement
Non-compliant listings are those that either don't disclose cleaning task information, place it in an incorrect location, or include unreasonable tasks. In cases of non-compliance, the Policy Enforcement Team will take the following actions:
First offense: Warning and request for correction.
Continued non-compliance:
- Remove unreasonable cleaning tasks based on traveler escalations. You will be notified of any removals.
- Suspend partners who egregiously circumvent this policy, including for self-enrichment at the traveler’s or Expedia Group's expense.
Appeals: You may appeal removed tasks by showing they were reasonable per the permitted criteria above, and directly related to the traveler’s routine use of the property.
